The short answer is no, we have not managed to extract any goodness from a fluffy white marshmallow into our latest product. Did you know that while there are Marshmallow’s there is also a Marshmallow Plant. What is confusing though is you won’t find any trace of Marshmallow root in your bag of Marshmallows anymore as it has been replaced with gelatin. So with that, let’s dive into the skincare benefits of Marshmallow Root Extract, what the heck it is, and why it is a hero ingredient in Tailor Elevate.
The Marshmallow Plant
We need a visual right, because I know you are still thinking about fluffy white marshmallows…
So, the marshmallow plant, who knew? Let’s talk about it. As with a lot of natural ingredients, they are not new to the world, and often were used as natural medicines back in the day. The marshmallow plant is no different, it comes from the “Althaea plant native to Northern Africa, Europe, and Western Asia.” But, where this gets interesting is with the roots, the "roots of the marshmallow plant contain a thick, gummy substance called mucilage.” But, the root’s benefits don’t just stop there, “…the root extract contains polysaccharides and flavonoids." We will dive into these benefits of the root below. Alongside these benefits, we chose to formulate our new product with this skin-loving ingredient, as it’s naturally derived component, meant it was in line with our core brand values, natural, vegan & cruelty free.
The benefits of Marshmallow Root Extract in your skincare
Calms and soothes irritated skin
If you’re prone to a bit of redness and irritation, well, you need this ingredient in your routine. The root of the marshmallow plant contains antioxidants which have anti-inflammatory properties that will protect the skin, to reduce skin irritation. The mulicage is what creates a protective layer between the skin and potential irritants. In particular those with sensitive skin would benefit from incorporating this ingredient into their skincare routine.
Helps to strengthen your skin's barrier
We all want healthy looking skin, right? Well, you'll want to include this ingredient in your routine. This is because, Marshmallow Root Extract is an emollient, which is designed to “soften and smooth skin by filling cracks in the skin’s outermost layer.” Therefore, by ‘filling cracks’ in the skin’s top layer, this ingredient is going to form a protective layer to strengthen your skin barrier from environmental stressors, as well as improve the skin’s overall appearance. This will do wonders for dry and dehydrated skin types, an ingredient worth adding into your routine.
Helps to reduce moisture loss
It’s all well and good to deeply hydrate your skin, but what about making sure your skin holds the water content in, to keep your skin moisturised for longer? Well, marshmallow root is a gel-like substance, when it’s applied to the skin’s surface, it forms a seal to trap water in to keep skin hydrated for longer. You could say it has moisture trapping abilities, another bonus.
Marshmallow Root Extract can be found in our NEW Tailor Elevate.
